Learn the fundamental tools and techniques of letterpress printing. We waste no time and dive in with students putting ink on paper! This is done using our Ostrander iron hand press from 1890, which is basically modeled after the famous Gutenberg wooden hand press of 1450.

After that, students are introduced to the basics of type setting, and set a word, phrase or short line of type. The work is combined into a group print project and printed using our Vandercook SP15 cylinder press. Students then learn about press work, lock up and make ready while pulling proofs. Every student gets a chance to operate the press and pull a handful of prints to bring home.

Please be conscious that cleanup and putting type away is every students responsibility, it does take time, and is part of the full letterpress experience.
