I am returning to letterpress work after a 49-year separation. I am new member of the co-op and am just getting my land legs back, so to speak. My renewed focus is on book design, typography and printing. I love the sound of a letterpress in motion.

Tami Lovett-Brumfield

Tami Lovett-Brumfield is a California native, born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Since the first time she picked up a pencil she’s had a passion for drawing and making things. As an adult that led to a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in Illustration from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.

It was here she first was introduced to letterpress printing. However, it wasn’t until almost a decade later she was able to take her first class at Iota Press. The tactile quality of the paper, smell of the ink and old machines were wonderful. From here it was love at first print.

Being part of the co-op allows for sharing of ideas, skills and the love of making handcrafted pieces using vintage printing presses with like-minded people.

I came to the NBLA Co-op with a background in printmaking and sculpture and have printed and studied at several studios and print shops in San Francisco and Sonoma County.

My current projects are influenced by the ways in which words and images can make a statement–either through a straight forward message or a tongue-in-cheek approach. The “cuts’ in the letterpress shop tell a story by repurposing familiar symbols from the past while challenging the image’s original intent. I appreciate that, today, these images can be printed in a new context and presented to a new audience while still maintaining their original relevance and authenticity.

I came to letterpress by virtue of one of my uncles wanting to reclaim space in his garage and gifting me a Golding Pearl platen press. He had heard I had done printmaking in college, which I had, although never any letterpress printing. The journey of learning this particular process began with an introductory class at San Francisco Center for the Book and continued with other classes at Iota Press. I found the medium fascinating, challenging and satisfying, and became a Co-op member in 2011. Working with others in the shop has been a wonderful opportunity to increase my knowledge and skills. I delight in haiku’s concise, elegant expression of what we experience, that asks big questions about our connection with Nature and our place in the Universe.

Letterpress printing, contemplative, aesthetically pleasing, brings to reality the long-held vision of my poems and other works through an interplay of space and paper, ink and typography in the company of a remarkable heart/brain trust of artists, poets and writers known as the NBLA Co-op. We consistently challenge ourselves and each other to new forms of expression that encourage and celebrate life.
